Guatemala is a place of magic some say
especially if you are into the Mayans, the mountains, the
markets or a ton of other things as well. Guatemala has a
million things to do while visiting and almost too much going on
and most people have to make more than one trip to see
everything. The younger crowd seems to always end up in Antigua
which is a beautiful town set in between three volcanoes. The
ones who are looking for a taste of the "real Guatemala" go to
places like Lago de Izabal or Nebaj, these are Maya villages
that are hidden in a secluded crease of the Cuchumatanes
mountains. Everyone usually ends up in the highlands such as
Lago de Atitlan which is an irresistible place to see. The Maya
heritage is shown everywhere in Guatemala through archaeological
sites and fascinating towns such as Chichicastenango.
Guatemala
has an economy that is still developing and is characterized by a
wide income. this is a country located in Central America of the
North American region and borders Mexico. Guatemala City is the
capital of the country. The name Guatemala means "land of the trees"
in the Maya-Toltec language. The very first evidence of any humans
settling in Guatemala dates back to 12,000 BC. Approximately in 6500
BC, Archaic sites were documented in El Quiche which is in the
highlands area. The weather in Guatemala ranges from cool to rainy
to muggy. From December to February Guatemala has cool nights and
mornings which is usually the best time to visit. In March and April
the weather is usually the hottest during those months. It starts to
rain some time in May or June and from July to September the weather
gets a little muggy. October and November are the endings of the
rain and it starts to get cooler.
According to most people there is no bad time
to visit Guatemala even though they do have a rainy season, but what
country doesn't? The people of Guatemala are mostly descendants from
the Mayan people. Guatemala City was the third city that was founded
and it was founded in 1776. It was on September 15, 1821 gained its
independence was gained from Spain and then became part of the
Mexican Empire.

Attractions in Guatemala
La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala
City first opened on December 25, 1924 while Jose Maria Orellana
was the president. The zoo was in a state of neglect during the
year of 1963, due to the state of neglect the government handed
over the AGHN which means administration of the Guatemalan
Association of Natural History. Renovations to the zoo started
in 1991 and still continue to happen to make the animals more
comfortable. Today the zoo ranks as one of the best zoos in
Central America. The zoo is divided into three main parts which
consist of the African region, the Asian Region, and the
American Region. Each region of the zoo has many animals that
are from that region originally. The zoo is really big on
education as well and holds an education center on the nature
which include audiovisual lectures, guided tours, workshops,
screening videos, a library, and Granjita.
The Museo de los Ninos which is the Children's
Museum in Guatemala which is out to secure the future of Guatemala
by educating the children. According to the architecture of the
building the future would take place on the moon. This museum is a
lunar-colonial structure and it hosts many different exhibits for
the younger as well as the young at heart. If you are looking for
something to do for a few hours this museum is the place to go to
let your inner child come out. You can have a lot of fun at the huge
game operation or ride a bicycle that has a skeleton attached to a
neighbor bicycle which shows the bone movement. Some of the other
exhibits in the museum include the centrifugal force simulator and
the static electricity generator. This museum is very close to the
zoo which are two great attractions for families who have children.
Lake Amatitlan is south of Guatemala City going
towards the Pacific Lowlands. The lake lays just a few kilometers
from the highway, the water is not for swimming but it is a great
place to have a picnic or barbecue. The lake is also a great place
for boat trips but the main attraction at the lake is the view of
the Agua and Pacaya Volcanoes. On the weekend there is a "bubble
lift" that visitors can take up to the Parque de las Naciones Unidas
for the best view of the two volcanoes. Pacaya is located to the
southern part of the lake and gives off a great orange glow from its
mouth. The weekends are the most busiest for the lake and takes
about 30 minutes from the city by car.
Mixco Viejo is the capital of the Pokoman Maya
and is a very important area of Maya ruins. This site is known to be
one of the best completely restored archaeological sites in the
country. It is not however very easy to reach, it can not be reached
by public transportation so visitors must get a four wheel drive
vehicle due to the last 15 kilometers being a dirt track. The bus
trip there and back takes about two to three hours each way which
makes it hard to do the trip in one day. There are no facilities at
the site either so visitors should bring food, toilet paper, and
drinks. Camping is a possibility as well if people want to.

Things to do and see in Guatemala
Antigua, Guatemala is known to be a very
charming city located in the high plains of the country. It takes
about 45 minutes to get to Antigua from the capital, Guatemala City.
There are three things Antigua is especially known for which are the
beautiful Spanish style architecture and cobblestone streets, the
many ruined churches and monasteries, and the majestic volcanoes
that are surrounding the city. Visitors love Antigua no matter what
time of the year it is. The city is full of restaurants, hotels that
are built with the Spanish style, flowered courtyards, and many
Spanish language schools. The Hotel Casa Santo Domingo is located in
Antigua and is said to be the best hotel in Central America with
modern styled rooms, a great pool, and parrots in the courtyard that
are very friendly.
Tikal is a place of enchantment with big and
beautiful temples and birds that sing all day long. Monkeys are
howling and the rainforest gives it a fresh smell with each breath
you take. This archaeological site is made up of mostly temples,
pyramids, stelae, and many other structures. There is about 30
percent of the ruins that have been partially or completely restored
and the other 70 percent still lies under many layers of dirt,
shrubs, and trees which will keep them preserved for many centuries
to come. Visitors can still see the hidden ruins by the shapes of
the hills and mostly all pyramids come in pairs. As far as animals
visitors will see monkeys, spider monkeys, many different birds and
very rarely jaguars can be spotted. There are two museums that are
close to Tikal's entrance as well.
Metropolitan Cathedral is an large twin towered
building that sits in the heart of Guatemala City. This structure is
300 feet long and 100 feet wide. It is located on the east end of
Parque Central. This building was designed by the Spanish architect
Marcos Ibanezand. It was built in the year of 1815 with a neo
classical style. Inside of this cathedral are many pieces of art
that came originally from the Cathedral of Antigua Guatemala which
was the nation's first capital. Also inside of the cathedral is the
first pipe organ in the country. This is a very strong cathedral due
to the fact that it has survived through three large earthquakes in
1830, 1917, and 1976.
The National Palace faces the Plaza
Mayor on the north side. This structure was built by
dictator/president Jorge Ubico and is actually called Palicio
Nacional de la Cultura. This palace is the third one that stands
on this spot. This building is opulant and imposing with
polished wood. The palace also has brass figures, carved stone,
crystal chandeliers, and arches that surround two Moorish-style
courtyards. There are always exhibits that are hosted in the
palace such as contemporary Guatemalan artists. There is a free
tour offered for the palace or visitors can wonder about by
themselves. The palace closes early so be sure to get there in
the morning which is usually better.
